I’ve noticed a couple of odd coincidences lately. Are Greek restaurant owners in North America
afraid that the poor financial situation in Greece is going to hurt business? A couple of days ago, menus for a local Greek
restaurant were left at every door in the building where I live. Greek yogurt, which is of course the latest
trend in dairy products, is on sale in supermarkets. Are restaurant owners and the dairy industry
afraid that the sad state of the Hellenic republic is going to lead to less yogurt,
gyros, and souvlaki being consumed? Is
this a bad time to invest in goat futures?
Will ouzo soon be cheaper than beer?
Just days after the United States reopened its embassy in Havana
Cuba, and months after the two countries decided to resume diplomatic relations,
I encountered some Cuban-Americans looking for the Cuban embassy in Canada
today. I was walking across a parking
lot and a car with New York licence plates stopped. The man on the passenger side held up a piece
of paper with the address for the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa. We were near the building so I gave him
directions. He and the driver of the car
spoke very little English. The note he
showed me was even written in Spanish.
Fortunately the word for embassy is similar to the English and French so
understanding it wasn’t a problem. After
the car drove away, I started wondering if many Cuban Americans are traveling
to Ottawa now in order to get the paperwork they need to be able to legally
visit Cuba again or to have their relatives in Cuba come and visit?
